Whilst being based at the Estate, we walked to the west coast and up to the northern tip to see the famous whirlpool. I would thoroughly recommend the experience to anyone. With 10 beautiful bedrooms, grand reception and dining rooms, a billiard room and large indoor pool, Jura House is the perfect venue for extra-special re-unions. The accommodation is what you would expect of a stately home, however it is also very "homely" and comfortable. In effect you are accommodated in a separate part of the family stately home. The House can accommodate up to 10 people, however current policy is that if a group makes a booking, they don't take any other bookings. The Ardlussa Estate is run by the Laird and his wife with their 4 daughters - the Fletcher Family. We opted for the dinner bed and breakfast rate as the nearest place to eat out is back in Craighouse at the Jura Hotel some 17 miles away. The Estate's website doesn't do justice to both the accommodation and the experience that awaits you. We chose to stay on the Ardlussa Estate because it was one of the most northerly places to stay on the Island. I always said I would return one day and decided to do so in April 2013 with two walking friends shortly after I retired. It was my first visit back to the Island of Jura since 1969 when I had visited as a Boy Scout aged 15. Andrew and Clare are very generous, telling us to help ourselves to the whisky, and making us packed lunches. It was lovely to see their 'free range' children around the estate - what an idyllic childhood. Andrew came and chatted to us a couple of times, and we learned a lot about Jura and about his job and his family - all very interesting. Both Andrew and Clare are lovely people - very friendly, but never intrusive. The bedroom overlooked the bay and we regularly watched deer from one window and a variety poultry from the other. The dinners were lovely, and Clare and co made them extra special by setting up the dining room with candles and a log fire. But we left thinking it was actually a bargain. To be honest, it was a bit more than we normally pay so we dithered a bit over whether to stay there. Golf hotels aren’t known for their beautiful decor, but this artwork-adorned place is out of the pages of a glossy lifestyle magazine. We chose to stay there because it's the most northerly place to stay on Jura and we wanted to bike/walk to Corryvreckan and Barnhill. It was also the home of one of the greatest writers of the 20th century - George Orwell. Our 2 nights at Ardlussa House are an experience we'll never forget. Located off the mainland's west coast, the long and narrow Isle of Jura is known for its soaring mountains, whisky, swirling whirlpools and wild roaming deer which far outnumber the island's residents.
